Though as I write this it is before 11pm on your Eastern Seaboard so not quite.

At what times do the polls open- and what time do they close? That is the stupid thing about your elections- voting is long over on the East coast and the electoral college cast their votes whilst on the West Coast the polls are still open. That is something that should be looked into. At least for the mainland- especially as 55 California votes are involved.

Though obviously not tonight. Are they as quick casting winners in congressional seats as the electoral college is?

It depends on the state for how quick things go.

Electoral college only affects the Presidential election-I may be mistaken(in thinking you meant otherwise), but not sure what your point in bringing that up was.

Many people vote early, so to be honest, they probably have a decent idea of who won what. And for the most part the information we get on who actually won comes from exit polls, not from actual tabulation.

It is currently 6:07pm(PST)

As of this moment, all the offices that have changed hands have gone to democrats.
The democrats have picked up 2 senate seats from republicans, 3 governerships from republicans, and 2 House seats(from one republican and one independent).

It looks like the the democrats will DEFINATELY be leaving today with more people in every kind of office. I don't think the change will approach the optomistic numbers the democrats were predicting, though. I think they'll be lucky to pick up the house. There's still an outside chance they could take the senate, but I don't think it's likely at this point.

I'm really hoping the dems pick up either the house or the senate. One or the other, I don't care, as long as one party doesn't control both houses AND the presidency. If the last 4 years are any indication, thats a rallying cry for unchecked stupidity...

EDIT: GOD DAMN LIEBERMAN! He kept his senate seat, shifting to independent. Man that guy is a fucking tool...

I bet he'll go straight back to the democrats now.

I have three televisions in my bedroom on three different TV stations, and obviously on my computer, with about 20 webpages and at this point the Republicans seem to be getting beaten badly.

This thing cnn has got, the twenty race tracker is coming in useful. It is unbelievable how close between webb and allen it- with 1.5 million votes tabulated a few minutes ago, allen was leading by 8

Republicans just lost another senate seat to the democrats, along with TWO more house seats.
EDIT: and another governership

What I think is huge- Reuters forecasts a swing of up to 35 in the House to the Democrats

Republicans currently hold 44 senate seats
Democrats currently hold 43
Not a bad showing, but they're getting into an area where the republicans are gonna pick up alot. I doubt democrats can win the senate, though they might have a chance if they can pull a couple key states(gonna go with 'not likely')

Republicans currently have 68 house seats, compared to democrats who have 83.
Looks like democrats are gonna win the house. As the vote counting moves across the midwest we'll see the republicans take the majority of the seats for a little while, but then the west coast will probably put democrats in the lead when the day ends. I'd say its about 60% chance the democrats will seize the house...

Tennessee has really, really closed up- the democrats were twenty points behind the republicans but now it is only three points

Oh man am I excited. Even the slight possibility that democrats will claim both houses is making me damn near giddy. I would just LOVE to watch Bush sit around doing jack shit for the next 2 years as a lame duck, or better yet, impeached.

....and the democrats take the Rhode Island Senate seat!

That means they have picked up 3 senate seats out of the 6 they need to claim a majority
